Children and Sealants

Before bringing your child to our Appleton office for the first time, please prepare him or her for this new experience. For very young children, there are excellent children’s stories that describe a visit to the dentist. Please discuss the positive aspects of dentistry with your child. Convey good feelings to your child about dental visits being a part of growing up. Please do not say, “The dentist will not hurt you.” Instead, say, “The dentist is going to show you lots of new and fun things to make your teeth sparkle and help you to have a prettier smile.”

I have never had such a good experience with getting a new crown. Not only was the temporary one done with precision, the new one was put on without pain and my bite is perfect! Also, the staff is very kind, caring and professional. Dr John really impressed me and I am thankful to have this team as I really hate going to the dentist....lol. Great place so far!

I have brought my kids there on more than one occasion to remove tooths that have been either infected or rotting. Regardless of my kids age and the slight difficulty my kids presented, the dentists and assistants were patient and efficient at ensuring my kids were calm, relaxed and taken care of. Other dentists refused to even help when one of my kids gave a hint of difficulty.

A Child’s First Visit

Young children handle morning appointments best because they start the day well-rested and more open to new experiences. Most children respond positively to their first dental visit, and with a little preparation, your child is likely to do the same. As you prepare your child for this important first step, we prepare ourselves to deliver the highest level of care. Part of that care may include preventive treatments like applying dental sealants in our Appleton office. To help us deliver the best possible experience, please share any relevant details about your child’s dental, medical, and social background.

What is the Process for Sealants?

Dr. Luther cleans and rinses the tooth surface to make sure that it is free of any decay. We rub a special cleansing liquid on the tooth and then rinse it away. Finally, a seal is applied, usually on the chewing surface of the back teeth until it hardens. The procedure is pain-free and takes about five minutes per tooth.

Who is a Good Candidate for the Sealants?

Anyone who is at a high risk for dental decay should consider sealants. In general, children are good candidates for sealants as long as they are applied before their teeth have a chance to decay.

Adults can also take advantage of sealants to prevent decay.
